The Five Stans in Central Asia sit at the crossroads of the ancient world, where Silk Road trading cities rise from the desert, nomadic traditions endure in mountain valleys, and a crater of natural gas has burned continuously in the Karakum Desert for decades. This journey takes you across all five – Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan – on an adventure that rewards curiosity with experiences you simply won’t find anywhere else.

Begin in Kyrgyzstan, where the Tian Shan mountains frame the shores of Issyk-Kul, one of the world’s largest alpine lakes. Walk the ancient lanes of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, where turquoise-tiled mosques and caravanserais have stood for centuries, with a comfortable Mövenpick stay in Samarkand along the way. Cross into Turkmenistan to spend a night at a yurt camp beside the Darvaza Gas Crater, where a vast, fire-rimmed sinkhole glows against the desert sky, before winding up in Ashgabat with a farewell dinner.
